Long before the harrowing Alaska Airlines blowout on Jan. 5, there were concerns within Boeing about the way the aerospace giant was building its planes. Boeing, like so many other American manufacturers, was outsourcing more and more of the components that went into its complex machines. A Boeing aerospace engineer presented a controversial white paper in 2001 at an internal technical symposium. The engineer, John Hart-Smith, warned colleagues of the risks of the subcontracting strategy, especially if Boeing outsourced too much work and didn’t provide sufficient on-site quality and technical support to its suppliers.

Aircraft close calls have been rising, prompting safety concerns. WSJ goes inside the air traffic control tower at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to see how controllers juggle around 2,100 flights every day. Photo illustration: Nayon ChoThe nation’s air-traffic-control system faces increasing hazards from short staffing, outdated technology and chronic underfunding, according to a federal report that examined safety issues following a string of close calls at U.S. airports over the past year. Staffing shortages at facilities that manage airplane traffic are leading to significant flight delays as the Federal Aviation Administration shuffles personnel to maintain safety at the expense of efficiency, the report said.

Airlines’ hiring binge has suddenly thrust many pilots behind the controls of different, bigger planes than they are used to flying. That rapid advancement to new cockpit seats is fueling anxieties over whether pilots’ newness to certain aircraft could lead to more minor mishaps that go unnoticed by the flying public—or more serious incidents and accidents.

An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to disable an aircraft’s engines while riding in the cockpit jump seat on a regional flight. Photo: Aubrey Gavello/Local News X/TMX via APFederal authorities suggested psychedelic mushrooms and depression may have played a role in an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot’s alleged attempt to shut down an airplane’s engines midflight. The details came as federal prosecutors accused Joseph David Emerson on Tuesday of interfering with flight crew members and attendants on a flight last weekend, which eventually landed safely in Portland, Ore.

Legacy and low-cost airlines use different models when planning their route networks. We asked a United Airlines global network planner to explain how the process works. Photo illustration: Nayon ChoBoeing struck a deal to sell as much as $40 billion in 737 MAX jets to Ryanair , a victory for the plane maker as it works to re-energize its business and patch up relations with the European discount airline. Ryanair said it agreed to purchase 150 of Boeing’s 737 MAX 10 jets, the longest version of the narrow-body aircraft, with options to buy up to 150 more. The Irish airline, Europe’s biggest by passenger numbers, will use the new planes to significantly grow its market share on the continent over the next decade, executives said.
FAA Plans New Sky Lanes for Air Taxis
  + stars: | 2023-05-03 | by ( Andrew Tangel | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Acting FAA chief Billy Nolen expects a widespread rollout of air taxis that will transform transportation, if regulators get it right. U.S. air-safety regulators are planning for new traffic lanes in the sky, intended to accommodate flying taxis being developed by startups and backed by major airlines. The Federal Aviation Administration expects the planned air taxis—electric vehicles designed to fly quietly—to initially buzz around American cities as soon as next year much as helicopters do today, said Billy Nolen, the agency’s acting administrator.
